Why I Think Animal Kingdom Is Disney’s Most Underrated Park
After visiting Walt Disney World many times, I’ve come to one conclusion that surprises a lot of people—Disney’s Animal Kingdom is the most underrated park at Walt Disney World. While many visitors rush through it in half a day, I genuinely believe it’s one of the most immersive, relaxing and beautifully designed parks Disney has ever created.
Whenever I ask friends which Disney park they’re most excited about, the answers are nearly always Magic Kingdom or EPCOT.
Animal Kingdom is often the park people say they’ll “fit in if they have time.”
I honestly think that’s a mistake.
Every time I visit Orlando, Animal Kingdom reminds me why Disney is so much more than just rollercoasters.
It’s a park where you slow down.
You notice the details.
You enjoy the atmosphere.
And, in my opinion, it has some of the best food anywhere in Walt Disney World.
One of the things I love most is that the park feels completely different from the others. It isn’t constantly trying to overwhelm you with attractions. Instead, it tells stories through its landscapes, wildlife, architecture and music.

If someone asked me which park feels the least like a traditional theme park, I’d choose Animal Kingdom every time.
That’s exactly why I love it.
Why Animal Kingdom Feels Different From Every Other Disney Park
Unlike the other Disney parks, Animal Kingdom isn’t built around fast-paced attractions alone. It’s designed to make you slow down, look around and appreciate the incredible level of detail that Disney’s Imagineers have created.
One thing I noticed on my first visit was how peaceful parts of the park feel.
Instead of rushing from ride to ride, you’ll find yourself wandering through trails, listening to waterfalls, spotting hidden animal carvings and watching wildlife.
It’s almost impossible to appreciate everything in one visit.
Every trip I notice something new.
Whether it’s the hand-carved details around Asia, the incredible rockwork in Pandora or the hidden pathways around the Tree of Life, Animal Kingdom rewards people who take their time.
That’s probably one of the reasons I think it’s so underrated.
Expedition Everest Is Still One of Disney’s Best Rollercoasters
If I could only ride one rollercoaster at Animal Kingdom, it would always be Expedition Everest. Even after riding it countless times, I still think it’s one of the best attractions Disney has ever built.
I honestly never get bored of it.
The queue itself is brilliant.
It feels like you’re exploring an old Himalayan expedition museum, filled with climbing equipment, maps and stories about the legendary Yeti.
Then comes the ride itself.
The backwards section still catches me off guard.
The views across Animal Kingdom are incredible.
And although Disney fans often debate whether Cosmic Rewind or Everest is the better coaster, Expedition Everest still holds a special place for me.
It’s thrilling without being overwhelming, and it’s one of the attractions I head for almost every visit.
Afterwards, I usually walk through the Asia section of the park before stopping for lunch at my favourite restaurant in Walt Disney World.
Why Yak & Yeti Makes Animal Kingdom Even Better
In my opinion, Yak & Yeti isn’t just the best restaurant in Animal Kingdom—it’s the best restaurant anywhere in Walt Disney World.
I’ve written an entire blog about my favourite Disney restaurants, and Yak & Yeti deserved the number one spot.
Every single Orlando holiday, it’s one of the first reservations I try to make.
I always order exactly the same meal:
- Korean BBQ Chicken to start.
- The 44 Farms Burger.
- Garlic Noodles on the side.
Those garlic noodles are honestly one of my favourite things I’ve ever eaten.
What I also love is the atmosphere.
After spending the morning walking around Animal Kingdom, stepping into the cool, beautifully themed dining room is the perfect way to recharge before heading back out to explore the park.
It’s one of those restaurants that has become part of my Orlando tradition.
Pandora – The World of Avatar Is One of Disney’s Greatest Achievements
If there’s one area that perfectly demonstrates why I think Animal Kingdom is Disney’s most underrated park, it’s Pandora – The World of Avatar. Even if you’ve never watched the Avatar films, it’s impossible not to be impressed by what Disney has created here.
The first time I walked into Pandora, I genuinely stopped for a few moments.
It doesn’t feel like you’re in a theme park.
It feels like you’ve been transported to another planet.
The floating mountains immediately grab your attention, but it’s the little details that really make this land special.
The waterfalls.
The strange plants.
The sounds.
The pathways.
Everything has been designed to make you believe you’re exploring an alien world.
I honestly think it’s one of the most immersive themed lands Disney has ever built.
Whether you visit during the day or after sunset when Pandora glows with bioluminescent lighting, it’s an area of the park that deserves to be explored slowly.
Flight of Passage Is Worth Every Minute of the Queue
Flight of Passage is one of the best attractions at Walt Disney World and a huge reason why I think Animal Kingdom deserves more recognition. The ride combines incredible technology, breathtaking visuals and an emotional story that makes it unforgettable.
I’ve ridden Flight of Passage several times now, and it still amazes me every single visit.
Without giving too much away for anyone who hasn’t experienced it yet, the sensation of flying over Pandora is unlike anything else I’ve ridden.
It’s one of those attractions where the technology completely disappears, and you simply enjoy the experience.
Even people in our group who weren’t particularly interested in Avatar came off saying it was one of the best rides they’d ever experienced.
If you’re visiting Animal Kingdom, this is one attraction I would absolutely prioritise.
Kilimanjaro Safaris Makes Every Visit Different
One of the biggest reasons why I think Animal Kingdom is Disney’s most underrated park is that no two visits are ever exactly the same. Kilimanjaro Safaris changes every single day because the animals decide what they’re going to do—not Disney.
I absolutely love this ride.
It isn’t about speed.
It isn’t about thrills.
It’s about slowing down and appreciating nature.
Some mornings we’ve seen lions walking around.
Other times they’ve been asleep.
Sometimes the giraffes come incredibly close to the truck.
On another visit we spent ages watching elephants playing together.
That’s what makes it so special.
Every safari feels unique.
It genuinely reminds me of visiting a wildlife reserve rather than a theme park attraction.
If you’re lucky enough to ride early in the morning, you’ll often see many of the animals being much more active.
Festival of the Lion King Is One of Disney’s Best Live Shows
I’ve watched Festival of the Lion King several times, and I still think it’s one of the greatest live shows anywhere at Walt Disney World.
Even if you’re not normally interested in stage shows, I’d still recommend making time for this one.
The singers are phenomenal.
The dancers are incredible.
The acrobatics are genuinely world-class.
Every performance I’ve seen has been packed with energy from beginning to end.
There are moments that make you smile.
Moments that make you laugh.
And moments where the whole audience joins in.
It’s another example of Animal Kingdom offering something completely different from the other parks.
Not everything has to be a rollercoaster.
The Walking Trails Are One of Animal Kingdom’s Hidden Gems
One of the most overlooked parts of Animal Kingdom is its collection of walking trails. They’re another reason why I think Animal Kingdom is Disney’s most underrated park, because they encourage you to slow down and discover parts of the park that many guests simply walk past.
I always try to make time for both:
- Maharajah Jungle Trek
- Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail
They’re beautifully designed.
You’ll see tigers, gorillas, exotic birds and many other animals in environments that feel incredibly natural.
These trails are also much quieter than the headline attractions.
Whenever I need a break from the crowds, this is usually where I head.
It’s peaceful.
Relaxing.
And another reminder that Animal Kingdom isn’t trying to be like every other Disney park.
Why Animal Kingdom Is Perfect for Photography
If you enjoy photography, I honestly think Animal Kingdom is Disney’s most underrated park for taking pictures. Every area feels carefully designed, with incredible landscapes, lush planting and beautiful details around every corner.
Some of my favourite photo locations include:
- The Tree of Life from Discovery Island.
- Pandora’s floating mountains.
- Expedition Everest across the lake.
- The colourful streets of Harambe.
- Asia’s temples and bridges.
- Sunset around the Tree of Life.
Unlike some of the other parks, Animal Kingdom feels incredibly green.
Every pathway is surrounded by plants, waterfalls and trees, making it one of the most beautiful parks to simply wander through with a camera.
Animal Kingdom Is the Perfect Park to Slow Down
Perhaps that’s the biggest reason why I think Animal Kingdom is Disney’s most underrated park. It reminds you that a Disney holiday doesn’t always have to be about rushing from attraction to attraction.
Some of my favourite memories haven’t happened on a ride.
They’ve happened while sitting outside Yak & Yeti after lunch.
Watching the animals on Kilimanjaro Safaris.
Listening to the sounds of Pandora.
Walking through the Gorilla Falls trail.
Taking photographs around the Tree of Life.
Animal Kingdom encourages you to slow down and appreciate your surroundings.
For me, that’s what makes it so special.
