Our guide to Orlando
If you are arriving in Orlando for the first time, you are likely to want to pick up the well-beaten tourist trail and head for DisneyWorld. Of course, this is a magical retreat with a wealth of must-see experiences, so we highly recommend that. Universal Studios is another pit stop you might want to find time for as there are some pretty fresh and exciting rides for film buffs of all ages. SeaWorld which includes several areas is a fabulous place for water babies and anyone who wants to get up close to some pretty massive fish (and mammals). To see any of the major theme parks properly you will need at least a couple of days in both, and it is worth getting all your tickets booked in advance. Take advantage of VIP deals that queue jump you into the attractions of your choice, otherwise be prepared to spend a lot of time waiting in lines which can be stressful with young children in your party. Kennedy Space Centre is also in the area and offers some fascinating behind the scenes information about space exploration and the life of the brave men and women who choose to be some of the first to leave the planet. Florida has its own Legoland which is the biggest in the chain and was built on the shores of Lake Eloise. Again there is loads to do for any Lego fan, and the fantastic work that goes into the onsite structures has to be seen to be believed. If you want to escape the plastic lights and sounds of the various theme parks, why not head out to Cocoa Beach which is situated less than an hour from the center of Orland and has a fabulous white sand beach and some of the most fantastic surf ever. Take some lessons or chill in the sand; the choice is yours.
Where to eat in Orlando
Obviously, all the parks have their own wealth of restaurants and food outlets but this is captive cattle market territory, and you will be paying premium prices for run of the mill food. If you want something a little more individual then why not head out to one of the many local eateries. The Bull & Bear Steakhouse takes pride of place within the Waldorf Astoria hotel, but you do not have to be a guest to eat there. Surf and Turf lovers will find a stunning array of delicious dishes to tempt and delight. Seasons 52 is a remarkable restaurant located off Sand Lake Road and offers down to earth cooking with a gourmet twist. Seasonal produce is used to create amazing dishes, and you can dine alfresco or inside as you wish.
Where to shop in Orlando
For those who love to shop until they drop, Orlando has some of the best upmarket boutiques and malls anywhere in the world. At Orlando Premium Outlets at International Drive, you will find a cluster of names from Hugo Boss to Ralph Lauren and Victoria's Secret to Quicksilver. If you want to step up from high street classics, head to The Mall at Millenia where you will find a heavenly choice of Jimmy Choo, Prada, and Tiffany & Co, to name just a few. The Florida Mall is the most extensive square footage mall and unsurprisingly attracts thousands of visitors every day. From high street names to independent stores this mall has it all, and if you get peckish every fast food joint in town has a spot there too.
